Laos on $30/Day: The Honest Budget Backpacker Guide

Laos is the least visited country in mainland Southeast Asia, and also one of the cheapest. The currency is Lao Kip (LAK), currently around 21,000 LAK per USD, and prices at local establishments are quoted in Kip while tourist-facing businesses increasingly quote in USD or Thai Baht. Navigating the three currencies can feel confusing at first — carry USD for exchanges, but Kip for daily spending.

Here is what money actually looks like in Laos in 2026.

What $30/Day Gets You in Laos

$30/day is a comfortable backpacker budget across most of Laos, with exceptions noted below.

Sample $30 day in Luang Prabang:

Sample $30 day in Vang Vieng:

Sample $30 day in 4000 Islands:

What $20/Day Gets You (Tight Budget)

Achievable everywhere except Luang Prabang, and even there if you dorm.

The main constraint is that Laos’ best experiences cost money: Kuang Si Falls ($2 entry + $2.50 transport), Kong Lor Cave ($15 entry + guide fee), Tonle Sap village tours. At $20/day, these activities blow your budget for the day — plan around them rather than ignoring them.

What $60/Day Gets You (Mid-Range)

At $60/day, Laos is a genuinely comfortable travel experience. You stay well, eat well, and do the activities without agonizing over the math.

Accommodation Costs Across Laos

CityDorm BedBudget PrivateMid-Range
Luang Prabang$6-10$15-25$40-100
Vientiane$5-8$10-18$30-70
Vang Vieng$5-8$10-18$35-80
4000 Islands$4-8$8-15$30-80
Thakhek$4-7$8-15$25-60
Pakse$5-8$10-18$30-60
Nong Khiaw$4-7$8-15$25-50
Phonsavan$5-8$12-20$25-50

Note: Luang Prabang is significantly more expensive than the rest of Laos due to its UNESCO status and demand. Budget travelers can manage, but prices are noticeably higher than Vientiane or the south.

Food Costs

Street food and markets: 10,000-25,000 LAK ($0.50-1.25) per dish. Sticky rice with grilled meat, noodle soups, fresh spring rolls, and grilled fish are all available at market stalls for under $2. The Luang Prabang night market food section has excellent vegetarian options for $1-1.50.

Local restaurants: 25,000-60,000 LAK ($1.25-3) per meal. These are the restaurants that serve Lao families — khao piak sen (rice noodle soup), laap (minced meat salad), or lam (rich stew), tam mak houng (green papaya salad), and sticky rice. The food is excellent and the prices are extraordinary.

Tourist restaurants: 60,000-150,000 LAK ($3-7) per meal. Higher quality, English menus, more variety. Worth doing occasionally but not daily when local food is this good.

Coffee: Lao coffee (ca phe, served with sweetened condensed milk) costs 10,000-20,000 LAK ($0.50-1) at local cafés. Specialty Bolaven Plateau Arabica at upscale cafés in Luang Prabang or Vientiane costs 25,000-40,000 LAK ($1.25-2). Both are excellent.

Beerlao: The national beer, universally available, usually costs 12,000-18,000 LAK ($0.60-0.90) at local bars and restaurants. In tourist areas in Luang Prabang, prices rise to 20,000-30,000 LAK ($1-1.50). Still affordable.

Transport Costs

Laos-China Railway: The game-changer for northern Laos travel. Vientiane to Luang Prabang: 2 hours, ~200,000 LAK ($10). Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng: 1 hour, ~120,000 LAK ($6). Book tickets at the station or online at lnr.la. The train is modern, comfortable, and dramatically faster than the bus alternatives.

Buses (city to city): 50,000-150,000 LAK ($2.50-7.50). Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw: $3, 3-4 hours. Pakse to Nakasang (for 4000 Islands): $2.50-3, 2-2.5 hours. Phonsavan to Luang Prabang: $6-8, 7-8 hours (scenic but winding).

Slow boat Huay Xai to Luang Prabang: 2 days on the Mekong, costs around $35-45 including the boat seat, accommodation at Pak Beng overnight, and meals on board. One of Southeast Asia’s great journeys — not cheap but extraordinary value for the experience.

Tuk-tuks within cities: 10,000-30,000 LAK ($0.50-1.50) for short trips. Always agree on price before getting in. Organized tuk-tuk day hire costs 150,000-300,000 LAK ($7.50-15) per day.

Motorbike rental: 100,000-150,000 LAK ($5-7.50) per day for a standard semi-automatic. Essential for the Thakhek Loop and Bolaven Plateau. Manual bikes (150cc+) cost slightly more.

Tours and Activities

Kuang Si Falls: 40,000 LAK ($2) entry. Transport by shared minivan from Luang Prabang costs 50,000 LAK ($2.50) each way — total day cost around $7.

Kong Lor Cave: 75,000 LAK ($3.75) entry + 200,000 LAK ($10) for the mandatory guided boat tour = ~$14 total per person. One of the best $14 spent in Southeast Asia.

Plain of Jars tour: 25,000-40,000 LAK ($1.25-2) for jar site entry + $20-30 for a guide and tuk-tuk. Half-day to full day.

Dolphin watching at 4000 Islands: 20,000-30,000 LAK ($1-1.50) for boat hire to the dolphin area. A bargain.

Prek Toal birdwatching: $35-60 for a guided half-day from Mechrey — the single most expensive activity in southern Laos, but extraordinary for birdwatchers.

The Hidden Costs

Laos visa: Most nationalities pay $30-42 for a visa on arrival (30 days). E-visa available at laoevisa.gov.la. Add this to your trip budget.

ATM fees: Lao ATMs charge 20,000-40,000 LAK ($1-2) per transaction. Withdraw larger amounts less frequently. BCEL ATMs have the lowest fees.

Night buses: Sleeping buses from Vientiane south are cheaper than flights but add a day of travel fatigue. Factor in the cost of arriving tired — sometimes a $60 flight is worth it versus a $10 overnight bus.

Slow boat supplies: The two-day slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang requires you to bring your own food (or buy from the stop at Pak Beng). Budget $15-20 extra for boat snacks, drinks, and the Pak Beng overnight guesthouse meal.

A Realistic 10-Day Laos Budget

For a backpacker doing the north (Luang Prabang → Nong Khiaw → Vang Vieng → Vientiane):

Category10-Day Total
Accommodation ($10-12 avg)$100-120
Food ($10/day)$100
Train (Luang Prabang → Vientiane via Vang Vieng)$25
Other transport (buses, tuk-tuks)$30-40
Kuang Si Falls$8
One Mekong slow boat section$20-25
Tours and activities$40-60
Miscellaneous + drinks$30-40
Total$353-418

This is approximately $35-42/day all-in for 10 days in northern Laos — a complete experience at a budget that genuinely represents exceptional value.

For the Thakhek Loop or Bolaven Plateau (motorbike routes), add $8-12/day for bike rental and fuel, offset slightly by the lower accommodation and food costs in smaller towns.
